Building Future-ready Careers in Health, Safety and Environment

"I learned about the hierarchy of controls, what asbestos was, and what a hydro-vac was." - ARA student

The Piritahi Health, Safety & Environment (HSE) team ran a workshop for school leavers participating in vocational training institute ARA’s Building Academy Programme.

The students aged 16-18 are interested in careers in carpentry and similar trades. Once a week, they work on rebuilding and renovating old homes to prepare them for sale.

We introduced the students to the world of health and safety in the workplace to get them ready for their future careers.

The presentation by HSE staffers Katie Ralph-Smith and Alexis Prebble walked students through basic principles and underscored what health and safety mean to us at Piritahi and its importance given the scope and high-risk nature of our business.

The session was a big hit and received high praise from Katie Dobson, the Construction Plus Education Advisor from Kāinga Ora who thanked our awesome team: ‘Your workshop was super engaging and well thought out. I particularly loved the chocolate PPE game!’

Teach them young we say! Well done team.
