Meet Bella Souza-Carroll, Programme Assistant

Meet Bella! Programme Assistant in the People & Communications team:

Tell us about your role: I am the Programme Assistant for the People and Communications team. Mainly assisting Carol Moffatt, our head of department, and the four other team leads.

Is this your first alliance experience? Yes! Took a while to wrap my head around but loved the concept from the minute I read about it.

How does the work you’re doing now compare with your previous roles and how have your previous roles helped what you do now? My previous work has been more day-to-day and quite routine in aspects, however at Piritahi there is a bigger objective we work towards and my range of tasks are very diverse. Having worked in real estate for example has taught me a lot about persistence and responsiveness which has helped me communicate more effectively and close out difficult tasks.

What are some challenges in your role? I think learning on the job has been challenging at times as I definitely prefer to be good at something off the bat! But at the same time it has been a massive opportunity for me to grow.

What have your biggest wins been so far? Assisting in the build of our stakeholder engagement platform and delivering that to our colleagues out in the community.

What’s the best comment you’ve received at Piritahi so far? Maybe just that I’m recognised to have a great attitude! I feel lucky to have a generally optimistic disposition.

What are you most excited about over the next 6 months? Seeing the CRM used to its full ability! And learning PowerBI to create better reports for the team.

What advice would you give to new graduates entering the industry? There will always be someone in the room who knows more than you! Be open-minded and friendly, always.

What did you want to be when you were a kid? A dancer! Or an architect. I used to tape A4 print paper together and draw birds eye cities that covered my whole bedroom floor.

What was your first job? I walked my football coach’s Pekingese, Gizbo, for $5 an hour.

What’s your favourite quote?  A vida é da cor que você pinta – Life is the colour that you paint it.

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given? Feel the fear and do it anyway.

Who inspires you the most and what lessons have you learned from them? Probably my parents, that nothing worth having ever came easy!

What is your favourite hobby / sport / what do you do for fun? I love taking my dogs out on walks, buying books I barely ever get to read and sometimes the driving range or amateur tennis.

What’s your favourite restaurant / eatery in Auckland? Café: Shore Road Café (creamy mushrooms!!), Restaurant: Azabu or Tonino’s.

What are your top 3 bucket list destinations in the world? The Azores, Tuscany and everywhere in South America.

What’s your favourite place in Aotearoa? Whangamatā, where I lived until I was 15 and still oftentimes visit.

What are you reading/watching right now - would you recommend it, and why or why not? Lots of Diary of a CEO podcasts, new season of The White Lotus and obviously the football world cup. I’d recommend them all to different people as it’s a bit of a mixed bag.
